SPIRITS
INTRODUCTION:
Spirits are the esoteric remains of people who have passed on from life. Why do Spirits linger? The main cause is usually emotions and regrets. Someone who has died, their spirit may linger if their goals in life were not fulfilled or if an emotional connection was strong enough to leave them attached. Spirits will often attach themselves to an area, an object, a person, or even rarer, a whole bloodline or family (usually their own family’s but this can vary depending on the circumstances surrounding their death.)
In general, Spirits are a lower priority in Hunter Society. Unless they are actively harming or going to cause mass harm to people, reports of them are generally ignored without hard evidence as more often than not, there were no Spirits involved at all.
DESCRIPTION:
A Spirit may simply appear as they were in life or they can manifest in less humanoid and more horrific forms. Some may be translucent or flicker in and out of vision depending on their connection to earth. Oftentimes, their cause of death or emotional state will influence their appearance. A spirit may appear in the way they died, or simply how they preferred to look while alive.
-
Vengeful Ghost
-
Vengeful Ghosts are the spirits of people whose death was either extremely violent or caused by some sort of betrayal; emotionally, they cannot move on until they receive satisfactory resolution to their ales.
-
They cannot touch or make physical contact with anything in the living world, but when they are active in an area, the temperature will drop, enough to be noticeable but only in the specific area the ghost lingers.
-
Their foul mood can also affect humans in the area, giving them a sense of dread or despair or anger.
-
Vengeful Ghosts can wander from their place of death, but they are most often found near the people who wronged them or at the site of their death.
-
They can speak and be heard and sometimes ask for help with their vengeful intentions. Other times, the Ghosts will lash out at anyone regardless of if they had anything to do with their death or not.
-
In some cases, vengeful ghosts have latched onto specific people and then their families as a result, influencing their luck and emotions.
-
They can take on a visible form that either represents the way they died or their emotional state. If they were beheaded, they may appear without their head entirely, for example. Emotionally, a ghost may appear older or younger than they actually are if they experienced chronic trauma before their death.
-
They can possess people but the level of control they may have over the person will vary.
-
Sometimes, Vengeful Ghosts may become poltergeists.
-
-
Lost Spirit
-
Lost spirits are the ghosts of people that are either unaware they have died or simply do not understand what happened to them or where they are. Their connection to Earth is often weak and they need someone who is sensitive to their energy in order to communicate.
-
Most commonly, Lost Spirits are children or teenagers, and they are some of the least violent and aggressive spirits.
-
Many of the deaths that Lost Spirits experienced were incredibly sudden or violent.
-
Lost Spirits can sometimes move or touch objects if they are small and for very short distances.
-
If a person is sensitive to the presence of Spirits, then Lost Spirits may be able to touch and linger with this person.
-
As far as locations go, Lost Spirits linger at their place of death unless told to move by a human they have come to trust.
-
Lost Spirits will often deny or ignore you if you tell them they are dead. (This is especially true if told by another spirit.) The main way to convince a Lost Spirit of their death is to show them evidence (which is often difficult to do as many are children and will not trust strangers.)
-
Lost Spirits can manifest visibly and often appear as they were shortly before their death, unscathed and unharmed. Many report having vague memories that directly correlate to their death but do not understand.
-
Sometimes, a Lost Spirit may have flickers in their appearance relating to their death. For example, if a Lost Spirit drowned, they may drip water or have water dripping down their skin and clothes.
-
Lost Spirits may become Vengeful Ghosts if they feel they have been abandoned.
-
-
Poltergeist
-
Poltergeists are spirits that have gained a corporeal form and the ability to move, touch, and interact with people and objects. They can communicate without a medium by using radios, TVs, or by simply speaking into the air.
-
Poltergeists are often sadistic and take joy in causing distress to people. They no longer seem to care about the status of their death, either. They are one of the hardest spirits to get rid of because of this. (However, some Poltergeists are also Vengeful Ghosts or Lost Spirits and can thus be consoled somehow into moving on.)
-
They can shapeshift, taking on forms completely unrelated to their original appearance such as animals and objects.
-
They can throw things around of various sizes, open and close doors, and disrupt radio waves.
-
Poltergeists are bound to one area, however, and cannot travel away from there.
-
Poltergeists can possess people but only for short periods such as during sleep.
-
-
Demons
-
Although similar to a Wendigo Spirit, Demons cannot manifest without having been a person first. Unlike all the other Spirits listed, Demons do not have to be human spirits. They can be the spirits of other Supernatural creatures (not including Wendigos) such as vampires and werewolves.
-
They can be and are violent like Poltergeists, but Demons have a higher intelligence and strategy to their actions. They feed off of the misery they cause and often have explicit goals in possession of a host.
-
Demons will usually pick on one person in particular with the intention of possession.
-
When a Demon chooses to possess a person, there is no way to stop the process. You can only remove them afterwards. Otherwise, possession is permanent.
-
While a person is possessed, they can still die (anything that would kill the person normally will still kill them) and the demon will continue to possess their body. The decaying process is extremely slowed.
-
Demon-possessed people who have died can be mistaken for vampires as their blood turns dark enough to look black.
-
Demons can take on physical forms for short periods. They can shapeshift and have telekinetic and telepathic abilities such as moving objects and people and causing nightmares and visual/audio illusions.
-
Demons are stuck being attached to an area or object unless they possess someone. Many demons choose to attach themselves to objects for this reason, as they can pretend they are attached to the area and go dormant in their object once "exorcised."
-
Being attached to an object often means demons cannot travel great distances without needing to possess someone.
-
-
People who have died after being possessed tend to become Vengeful Ghosts or Lost Spirits.
-
All Spirits, when taking on a visible form, have varying degrees of transparency and translucency. Demons and Lost Spirits are the only spirits that have ever been noted to take on opaque forms on their first try. Poltergeists must gain strength over time and Vengeful Ghosts tend to flicker like candlelight even when opaque.
ABILITIES:
-
Telekinesis: Poltergeists and Demons can move things without touching them.
-
Telepathy: Poltergeists and Demons can sense emotions, cause visual and auditory hallucinations and illusions, and affect dreams by causing nightmares.
-
Possession: All Spirits, including Demons, can possess all creatures, including druids (though druids and oni are difficult to possess even for Demons.) Demons can possess people indefinitely while Poltergeists and Vengeful Ghosts can only possess someone temporarily (up to a few days if the Spirit is strong)
-
Possession can be undone through exorcisms.
-
The possessed person must be secured so they cannot harm themself or others through physical means.
-
The person performing the exorcism must know the name of the Spirit they are exorcising in order to be successful.
-
Although anyone can perform an exorcism, Hunter Society tends to employ Druids as they have the least chance of being possessed after the Spirit is removed from its original host.
-
Druids can also perform the exorcism in a different manner, meaning no chanting or symbols are required as a Druid can pinpoint the Spirit and separate them from their host exactly.
-
Advantages
-
Cannot be physically harmed by conventional means
-
No aging… since they are dead
-
All illnesses, diseases, and human injuries do not affect spirits
Disadvantages
-
Limited to being attached to an area or object, making it a bit easier to narrow them down.
-
Can be summoned and controlled by anyone with the right words and symbols.
-
The longer a Spirit lingers, the worse their state of mind will become when left alone.
Ways to Kill
-
Can’t kill what’s already dead…
-
Spirits can only be laid to rest or exorcised.
